Job summary

Controller | Venture Backed, High Growth Fintech | Texas, United States (Hybrid)

Versified is supporting a venture backed fintech with the appointment of a Controller. The business is growing quickly, and this role offers the chance to lead and shape its accounting function through the next phase of that growth. The position is hybrid, combining time in the Texas office with remote working.

About the role

Reporting to senior finance leadership, the Controller will be the most senior accounting specialist in the business and will have full responsibility for financial reporting, accounting operations and audit. There is real scope to put your own mark on the function, from how the team is structured to the standards it works to.

What you will be responsible for

• Building and leading a capable accounting team, setting clear expectations and developing people into confident owners of their areas
• Delivering accurate, timely monthly, quarterly and annual reporting under US GAAP for the board, investors and lenders
• Improving the speed and reliability of the close
• Strengthening internal controls and documentation so the function is well prepared for future SOX requirements
• Managing the relationship with external auditors and tax advisers
• Setting accounting policy and preparing technical papers on revenue and other areas of judgement
• Working with FP&A, product and operations teams to improve the quality of financial data at source
• Taking ownership of the finance systems landscape and how it develops

What our client is looking for

• An active CPA with a public accounting background
• At least ten years of experience, including a senior accounting leadership role within a growing business
• Full ownership of a close and general ledger, whether as Controller, Assistant Controller or Director of Accounting
• Experience designing or improving internal controls and leading external audits to a clean outcome
• Strong technical accounting judgement, particularly around revenue recognition
• Practical experience with ERP and close management systems
• A proven ability to recruit, lead and develop accounting teams

Experience within financial services or technology, or of preparing a business for a first audit or SOX, would be an advantage.
