Job summary

Abbott Construction is seeking a Project Engineer/Manager to support commercial construction projects through budgeting, planning, and subcontract negotiation. The role emphasizes collaboration with owners, architects, and subcontractors to ensure timely, on-budget project execution.

You will help manage plans, permits, schedules, and compliance, while mentoring junior team members and contributing to value engineering, risk management, and quality control throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related field.
• Minimum of two or more years of commercial construction experience.
• Demonstrates excellent communication skills by expressing ideas clearly and effectively and has strong negotiation skills.
• Understands construction laws and practices; applies building codes and other design requirements correctly and reads blueprints correctly.
• Maintains the Abbott Construction standard of ethics, conduct, and organizational policies.
• Excels in problem solving; finds relationships between data to formulate solutions.
• Works well with others and helps co-workers, customers, and others to achieve goals.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the preparation of estimates, project budgets and unit cost reports.
• Organizes and conducts pre-construction planning meetings.
• Participates in the successful negotiation of project subcontracts.
• Assists the project team in preparing the project management plan and planning the execution of the construction contract.
• Participates in value engineering services as appropriate.
• Obtains and reviews plans and specifications and determines their completeness and consistency.
• Assists in obtaining permits and resolves regulatory requirements as necessary.
• Prepares project schedules and milestones with the Project Superintendent.
• Develops monthly client pay requests and follows up on billings for timely collection.
• Controls payment of job and subcontractor costs based on progress and coordinates with the job cost accountant for payments and lien releases.
• Participates in monthly job cost reviews to improve profitability.
• Manages material and equipment procurement within budget and schedule.
• Develops and monitors quality, safety, and risk management plans.
• Negotiates owner and subcontractor change orders and manages impacts on schedule, cost, and profit.
• Attends and may take notes for project team meetings and coordination meetings.
• Coordinates close-out procedures including as-builts, punch lists, final billing, occupancy permit and warranties.
• Participates in post-completion reviews and provides data for Preconstruction databases.
• Trains and mentors project and field engineers and other team members.
• Manages project engineers to ensure construction compliance through submittals and RFI handling.
• Updates and implements software for collaboration, quality, and document management.
• Develops and maintains owner relationships.
