Job summary

New York City Fire Department seeks a full-time Computer Associate (Operations) in the Bureau of Enterprise Technology to provide first-level technical support and assist senior staff on mission-critical systems such as FireCAD and EMSCAD.

You will monitor hardware and software, perform routine tasks, and document incidents, ensuring timely escalation and clear records. A relevant certificate or degree with experience is required.

Qualifications

• Minimum qualifications include a technical certificate (675 hours) with 2 years of computer operations experience in large-scale networks or a 4-year degree with 3+ years in similar environments.
• Or a high school diploma with 4 years of related experience.
• Combination of education and experience accepted with limit that at least 2 years are in computer operations.

Responsibilities

• Act as the initial point of contact for incoming IT-related calls and requests.

The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a full-time Computer Associate (Operations) in the Bureau of Enterprise Technology. The successful candidate will:

• Provide first-level technical support to FDNY personnel and assist senior technical staff across BTDS.
• Perform routine operational tasks to support FireCAD, EMSCAD, and other mission-critical systems.
• Monitor primary and backup hardware, software, peripherals, and applications; identify basic issues and perform initial troubleshooting.
• Escalate complex or unresolved technical issues to Level 3 staff following established escalation procedures.
• Maintain detailed logs and documentation of all support activities, incidents, and resolutions.
• Assist in developing and maintaining operational templates, logs, and tracking documents.
• Act as the initial point of contact for incoming IT-related calls, including user requests, reports, and updates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. A certificate from an accredited technical school (approximately 675 hours) with a specialization in computer operations, and two years of satisfactory full-time computer operations experience, in a large-scale networked, multi- tiered, or mainframe computer environment, or two years of satisfactory data communications network experience working in a mainframe or multi-tiered computer environment; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and three years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in "1" above; or
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in "1" above; or
4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2",or "3" above. However, all candidates must have at least two years of full-time experience as described in "1" above

PREFERRED SKILLS

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating systems (PC and server environments).
• Ability to learn or navigate legacy command-line systems such as OpenVMS (training provided if needed).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint.
• Basic understanding of networking fundamentals (IP addressing, routing, switching).
• Ability to use Windows-based diagnostic tools such as tracert, ping, ipconfig, and nslookup to verify network connectivity.
• Strong communication, documentation, and customer service skills.
• Certifications a plus: CompTIA A+, Network+.
