Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate via NAACLS or completed program with internship.
• In lieu of internship, 6 months phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of phlebotomy certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• Ability to perform venipuncture techniques on adults, children and infants.
• Interpersonal and clerical skills to inform patients and maintain records.

Responsibilities

• Verifies patient identification and applies tourniquet for venipuncture.
• Selects vein or capillary site and performs venipuncture or capillary puncture.
• Labels tubes with complete information and posts-venipuncture care.
• Receives and processes specimens for transport; locates and documents required data.
• Greets patients, informs on specimen collection procedures and enters orders as needed.
• Maintains infection control and keeps work areas clean and organized.
• Assists in training nursing aides, laboratory staff and students in blood collection techniques.
