Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate through NAACLS and/or internship with 100 venipunctures.
• In lieu of internship, 6 months phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of certification, 5+ years phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• Ability to perform venipuncture on adults, children and infants.
• Strong interpersonal skills to explain procedures and reassure patients.
• Knowledge to support care considering aging and cultural patterns.

Responsibilities

• Verifies patient identification and applies tourniquet for venipuncture.
• Performs venipuncture and capillary collection across ages.
• Labels tubes with complete patient information.
• Instructs patients on clean-catch urine collection as required.
• Interfaces with LIS and routes specimens for testing.
• Communicates STAT requests and patient concerns to lab staff.
• Assists training of nursing aides and students in blood collection.
