First Merchants Corporation invites college students to join its 12-week paid Summer Internship Program in Michigan. The Internship offers hands-on experience across business areas including Credit Administration, Commercial Banking, Treasury Management, and more.

The Commercial Banking Intern will learn credit risk assessment, financial analysis, and the sales cycle, while gaining hands-on experience in relationship management and portfolio development.

Qualifications

• Be a full-time Bachelor (or higher) degree-seeking student at an accredited college or university.
• Be available to work 40 hours per week from May 17th- August 6th, 2027.
• Be authorized to work in the United States.
• Have demonstrated interest in the industry and/or specific area of interest.
• Possess a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Be able and willing to travel periodically throughout the First Merchants footprint, if applicable.

Responsibilities

• Learn the roles within commercial banking and the products and services the bank provides commercial customers.
• Gain skills in assessing credit risk, analyzing financial data, portfolio management, and the team-based credit decision process.
• Learn the commercial banking sales cycle, relationship banking, whole-bank selling techniques, and commercial banking sales management, while gaining hands-on sales experience.
• Complete trend reports for borrowing base certificates.
• Complete covenant monitoring and annual credit reviews.
• Attend and participate in loan committees and opportunity memorandum discussions.
• Partner with relationship managers on prospecting activities and participate in client calls.
• Monitor loan maturity dates and recommend renewal strategies.
