Job summary

MusC Community Physicians (MCP) seeks a coder/abstracter to assign accurate codes for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services per medical records. You will follow ICD-10 and CPT guidelines and official coding standards set by AMA, AHA, and AHIMA, aligned with MUSC policies.

Ideal candidates have an associate degree in health information technology or 5 years coding experience, plus coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS). RHIT/CCS/CPC credentials are preferred.

  • Associate's degree in health information technology or related field; 5 years coding experience or coding certification may be required.
  • Coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS) preferred/required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with good interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate ICD-10 and CPT codes for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services as indicated in the medical record.
  • Ensure coding aligns with official AMA, AHA, and AHIMA guidelines and MUSC HIM policies.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team and maintain documentation quality and timeliness.

Job Description Summary

The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurate code assignment of all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures and conditions as indicated in the patient medical record.

Job Description

The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurate code assignment of all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures and conditions as indicated in the patient medical record. Classification systems include ICD-10 and CPT edition, and all coding is in accordance with official coding guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Health Information Management Association. All work is carried out in accordance with the Health Information Management Department and MUSC approved policies and procedures.

Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in health information technology or related field or 5 years coding experience; coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS) required.
  • With Associate's degree, minimum of 2-3 years of experience in coding and familiarity with coding software.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to resolve coding issues.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
  • RHIT, CCS, CCA, CPC, CPC-A, or other coding credential required
