Job summary

Observable Space in Los Angeles is seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to operate 3- to 5-axis CNC equipment and produce high-precision components for optical, aerospace, and mechanical systems. You will read drawings, run programs, and perform first-piece inspections in a fast-paced prototyping environment.

You will work with aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, and specialty alloys, collaborating with engineers to implement design changes and optimize processes.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of hands-on CNC machining experience in a machine shop or prototyping environment.
• Experience operating CNC milling machines and/or CNC lathes.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, machining specifications, and basic GD&T.
• Experience using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges).
• Understanding of cutting tools, speeds and feeds, material removal, and surface finishes.
• Experience machining aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium.
• Ability to recognize machining defects, troubleshoot basic issues, and maintain consistent part quality.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and commitment to precision workmanship.
• Ability to work independently on assigned machining tasks and collaborate effectively with engineers and other technicians.
• Willingness to occasionally support time-sensitive projects outside standard business hours.

Responsibilities

• Operate CNC milling machines (3-, 4-, and 5-axis) and CNC lathes to manufacture precision components.
• Machine complex parts from engineering drawings, CAD models, and established instructions.
• Monitor operations, adjust tools and parameters to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
• Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments.
• Read GD&T and engineering specifications to ensure conformance.
• Identify and troubleshoot tooling, material, and process issues during production.
• Deburr, finish, and perform post-machining operations as required.
• Collaborate with mechanical, optical, and manufacturing engineers on prototypes and low-volume parts.
• Assist with fixture and tooling development; support rapid design iterations and changes.
• Support other fabrication processes and maintain a safe, clean machining environment.
