Qualifications

• One year of experience as an interpreter in healthcare preferred.
• Certification of completion of an Interpreter Program required; national certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face-to-face or telephone encounters.
• Acts as a liaison between patients and staff.
• Informs clinicians about cultural considerations for Spanish-speaking patients.
• Interpreter for ancillary departments.
• Interpreters between non-clinical staff and patients as needed.
• Provides support for the Interpreter Services Coordinator as needed.
• Edits translated materials.
• Identifies areas where the hospital can better meet the needs of Spanish communities.
• Explains interpreter model to clinicians and patients.
• Assists with training staff interpreters.
• Orients patients to hospital as needed (L&D tours, events).
• May perform on-call services evenings/weekends/holidays.
• May assist with Community Health classes needing a Spanish interpreter.
