Qualifications

• Bi-lingual (oral and written) bi-cultural skills.
• Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory.
• Satisfactory fluency in English and target language(s) at a level that ensures accurate interpretation.
• One year of experience working as an interpreter in a healthcare environment is preferred.
• Certification of completion of an Interpreter Program required. National certification preferred.
• High School diploma or equivalent (GED). BA/BS preferred.

Responsibilities

• Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face-to-face or telephone encounters.
• Acts as a liaison between patients and staff.
• Informs clinicians about cultural considerations when treating Spanish-speaking patients.
• Interpreter for ancillary departments.
• Supports interpreters across departments as needed.
• Edits translated materials.
• Identifies areas to better meet the needs of Spanish communities, including outreach and signage.
• Explains interpreter model to clinicians and patients.
• Assists with training staff interpreters.
• Orients patients to hospital services and tours as needed.
• May perform on-call services evenings, weekends, or holidays.
