Job Summary
Performs a variety of duties to support the testing, delivery, and distribution of lab results. Performs laboratory procedures including phlebotomy, capillary puncture, and other specimen collection processes.
Essential Responsibilities
- Complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies. Demonstrates quality in work habits and clinical practice. Ensures patient safety in medication, procedures, infection prevention, and fall prevention, including using two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards and incidents promptly.
- Greets and communicates courteously with patients.
- Provides clear patient collection instructions.
- Knows specimen collection processes. Proficient with computer systems and software as required.
- Completes laboratory orientation, training, and ongoing education.
- Follows procedures for patient identification, specimen collection, and labeling.
- Receives and processes specimens from patients and departments.
- Assesses specimen integrity, prepares, packages, and arranges transport of specimens. Processes specimens, including racking, creating work lists, and loading instruments.
- Performs equipment maintenance and manages startup/shutdown.
- Answers routine inquiries professionally. Provides excellent customer service and demonstrates service recovery skills.
- Performs waived and moderate complexity lab testing and enters results into the system.
- Documents and communicates results, including alerts.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience
At least six months of concentrated phlebotomy experience within the last three years, which may substitute for formal training.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy training program with an 80-hour externship within the last year, or two years of concentrated phlebotomy experience, or a Medical Assistant program including phlebotomy with six months of experience.
License, Certification, Registration
- Phlebotomy Technician Certificate from ASCP, NHA, AMT, or similar within 12 months of hire.
