Beth Israel Deaconess Milton is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Assistant I / Accessioning.
This position is full-time at 40 hours a week.
POSITION FUNCTION:
Under the supervision and direction of the Manager, Supervisor, Laboratory site or designee, accurately and efficiently processes blood, cultures, and body fluid specimens from patients for laboratory testing, following Laboratory policies and procedures. Performs pre-analytic processing procedures and completes all associated documentation, both written and computerized.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Accurately follow physician orders when ordering tests in the Laboratory computer system. Determine and implement appropriate actions when unsure of an order or specimen required. Document all pertinent patient demographic and insurance information if performing registration.
- Receive specimens in the Laboratory computer system and distribute them according to the urgency of the test requested. Prepare specimens following the test procedure and store at the appropriate temperature if not immediately distributed.
- Process all samples correctly using aseptic technique, including centrifugation and liquefaction if needed.
- Process send-out testing to Quest and other reference labs, creating proper site batches by temperature.
- Maintain competencies required for the specific patient population served.
- Answer telephone according to Laboratory policy, relay messages accurately, and assist callers with questions or direct them appropriately. Fax results in accordance with Laboratory and Hospital policy.
- Communicate test and specimen collection information to clients (patients, family, physicians, healthcare providers) respectfully and appropriately, even under adverse conditions.
- Communicate significant events/information and pending testing to the next shift.
- May be required to learn and maintain competency in phlebotomy, including patient education and documentation.
- Maintain supplies and submit orders as needed. Keep phlebotomy trays organized.
- Monitor equipment function, document issues, and take corrective actions as needed in consultation with the Supervisor.
- Participate in department, hospital, and committee meetings. Engage in continuing education and seminars.
- Assist with compliance and preparedness activities for regulatory agencies.
- Perform job functions promoting safety and health for co-workers, patients, and visitors.
- Perform all duties in accordance with safety laws, regulations, and hospital policies.
- May be required to perform similar duties on an emergency basis or as designated.
- All functions are subject to change; may require working off-shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call to maintain laboratory services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED required
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 0-1 years in a laboratory setting. College science credits preferred.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATION: Not Required
OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and general computer skills.
- Organized with the ability to meet deadlines.

- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Strong analytical skills, detail-oriented, and able to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
