Job summary

Indian Health Service is seeking a Medical Technician (Laboratory Support) in Washington to perform a broad range of clinical laboratory tests and to ensure accurate and timely results for patient care. The role supports quality assurance and accreditation efforts in line with CLIA and CAP requirements.

The position requires background investigation and compliance with public law considerations, with expectations to maintain proficiency in specimen handling, testing, and reporting.

Qualifications

• Six months of general experience for GS-04 and six months of specialized experience in clinical laboratory support for GS-04/05-07.
• Experience in performing CLIA-waived tests and documenting quality control activities (GS-05).
• Education substitutions for experience (associate degree with lab training) accepted for various GS levels.
• Education alternatives include bachelor’s degree or related coursework with combined education/experience.
• Ability to collect, process, and document specimens and to operate and maintain laboratory instrumentation.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory testing across chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, serology, and blood banking.
• Evaluate test results, troubleshoot, and ensure accuracy of laboratory findings.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments; prepare reagents and media; monitor quality control.
• Collect and process patient specimens; accession and track specimens in lab systems; prepare for referral testing.
• Validate and document results; communicate findings to healthcare providers and support QA/compliance.
