Job summary

Block by Block is hiring a Cleaning Ambassador to keep public spaces clean, friendly, and safe in Iowa City. You will engage with passersby, collect and remove litter, and report safety concerns using basic daily reports.

The role requires 18+ years old, a HS diploma or GED, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather. A valid driver’s license is preferred.

Qualifications

• Must have the physical capacity to walk or traverse continuously during an eight-hour shift, with two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break.
• Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language.

Responsibilities

• Provide high visibility street-level cleaning and maintain a positive, professional demeanor at all times.
• Acknowledge and engage pedestrians, provide directions and city information when needed.
• Remove litter and graffiti from streets, sidewalks, and surrounding areas; pull weeds in tree wells and cracks.
• Dampen and straighten outdoor surfaces; monitor for safety and report incidents as needed.
• Complete basic daily reports of tasks performed, in English.

Job Title: Cleaning Ambassador

Pay Range: $18.50 to $19.06 per hour (Weekly Pay & Pay Advance Before Pay Day!)

What You'll Be Doing

• This role will provide a high level of visibility at the street level to carry out a wide variety of cleaning tasks in the zone assigned. Must maintain a positive, professional demeanor at all times.
• Actively acknowledge and engage pedestrians and visitors with a friendly greeting/smile in order to provide directions and/or city information.
• Litter removal -- While moving through the zone with a rolling trash can that has supplies/tools, remove litter: fast food bags, cups, soda cans, cigarette butts and other debris on the streets/sidewalks and alleys. Remove graffiti and posters from light posts, trash cans, news boxes, etc.
• Pull weeds that grow at the base of tree wells, in cracks in the sidewalks, and vacant lots.
• Damp wipe and straighten outdoor surfaces, such as trash can lids, news boxes, etc.
• Be watchful for unwanted behaviors or criminal activity and report to the Safety Ambassadors via two-way radios. Must be able to complete basic daily reports of tasks completed, which requires being proficient in speaking, reading, and writing the English language.
