Job summary

The City of Hampton seeks an experienced City Engineer to lead and supervise the Engineering Services Division within the Department of Public Works. This role directs engineers, surveyors, and technical staff to deliver public infrastructure projects with strong judgment and independent decision-making.

We value a candidate who can provide strategic direction, manage budgets, conduct briefings, and travel as needed.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
12 years of full-time equivalent experience in the administration of complex public works programs.
10 years of supervisory experience.
Professional Engineering License (PE) in the state of Virginia required or the ability to obtain through comity within six (6) months of date of employment.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
This position is considered safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy; will be subject to random testing while an incumbent in this position.

Responsibilities

Lead, plan, direct, and oversee the Engineering Services Division within the Department of Public Works.
Provide leadership, supervision, and strategic direction to engineers, surveyors, and technical support staff.
Ensure effective delivery of engineering services and public infrastructure projects.
