Job summary

The City of Norfolk seeks a dynamic Director of Public Works to lead the design, construction, and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure, transportation, surveys, stormwater, waste management, and towing and recovery programs. You will oversee a team of 350+ employees and report to the City Manager’s Executive Management team, ensuring safe, efficient and reliable public facilities and services.

Qualifications

• Requires degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field.
• Master's Degree or equivalent combination of training and experience required.
• Seven (7) years of experience managing and directing staff and programs of a major, multi-faceted local government public works agency.

Responsibilities

• Provides supervisory oversight and leadership for personnel evaluations and development.
• Coordinates project activities with outside agencies and interfaces with civic leagues and business groups.
• Manages budgets, design and construction projects, and policy decisions for departmental operations.
• Serves as a member of city-wide committees and special assignments.
