Position: Surgical Technologist II (Operating Room Scrub Technician)

The Surgical Technologist II is responsible for setting up the sterile field, gathering supplies for surgical cases based on knowledge of instruments and equipment, and passing instruments to surgeons during surgery. This role also performs count procedures during surgical cases as per policy.

Serves as a resource and preceptor to less experienced Surgical Technologists and takes call for routine and high-acuity cases after the orientation period. Learns, performs, and completes assigned responsibilities during the transitional duty period.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

• Registered by the State Board of Medicine
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C), or Certified Operating Room/Surgical Technician (CORST)

Certification or Registration Requirement for Continued Employment:

• Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine
• Current AHA BLS, HCP Certification
• Current CST, TS-C, or CORST

Experience:

• Required: Minimum of 6 months experience as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub tech position
• Preferred: 2 years experience

Education/Training:

• Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, military training, or LPN program
• Preferred: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program

Additional Responsibilities:

Functions under RN or independent practitioner supervision, providing direct patient care, emotional support, and problem solving in accordance with hospital policies. Requires prior approval for schedule changes or care deviations. May handle medications and supplies.

Work Schedule & Other Requirements:

• Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays
• Schedule rotations established with Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator
• Take independent call after orientation
• Physical demands include lifting 50-100 lbs, exposure to hazardous substances, prolonged standing, walking, climbing, reaching, and other physical activities
• Must have strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, and communication skills
• Work environment may be noisy and fast-paced, requiring adaptability
