Position Overview

The Surgical Technologist II (operating room scrub technician) sets up the sterile field, gathers supplies for surgical cases based on knowledge of instruments and equipment to be used. This position passes instruments to surgeons during surgery and performs count procedures per policy during surgical cases.

The Surgical Technologist II serves as a resource and preceptor to less experienced Surgical Technologists and takes call for routine and high-acuity cases after the orientation period. This role also learns, performs, and completes assignments/responsibilities during the transitional duty period.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
  • Registered by the State Board of Medicine and Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) or Certified Operating Room or Surgical Technician (CORST) certification.
Certification or Registration Requirement for Continued Employment:
  • Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine, current AHA, BLS, HCP Certification, and current CST; TS-C or CORST required.
Experience REQUIRED:
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub technician position.
Experience PREFERRED:
  • 3-5 years experience as a surgical technologist or related scrub technician, with 2 years in a specific practice area.
Education/Training REQUIRED:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, military training program, or Licensed Practical Nursing Program.
Education/Training PREFERRED:
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.
Independent Actions:

Functions under the direction of RN or independent practitioner in providing direct patient care, emotional support, and problem solving, in accordance with hospital, nursing, and unit policies and procedures.

Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor for schedule changes, legal issues, care deviations, and educational resource identification.

Additional Position Requirements:
  • Surgical Technologists work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules established with the Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator.
  • Must take independent call for routine or high-acuity cases after orientation.
  • Physical ability to lift 50-100 lbs., exposure to hazardous substances, and perform activities like prolonged standing, walking, climbing, reaching, and bending.
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, reading, and adaptability to a fast-paced environment.
Physical and Sensory Requirements:
  • Physical: Lifting, exposure to hazards, activities involving standing, sitting, bending, reaching.
  • Mental/Sensory: Recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking, reading.
  • Emotional: Ability to handle a fast-paced, noisy environment with multiple priorities.

Rotating shifts and schedules are subject to change to meet staffing needs.
