Position Overview

The Surgical Technologist II (operating room scrub technician) sets up sterile fields, gathers supplies for surgical cases based on knowledge of instruments and equipment. This role passes instruments to surgeons during surgery and performs count procedures per policy during surgical cases.

The Surgical Technologist II serves as a resource and preceptor to less experienced Surgical Technologists, takes call for routine and high-acuity cases after orientation, and learns, performs, and completes assigned responsibilities during the transitional duty period.

Licensure, Certification, and Registration Requirements
  • Registered by the State Board of Medicine and Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C), or Certified Operating Room/Surgical Technician (CORST).
  • Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine, current AHA BLS and HCP certifications, and current CST, TS-C, or CORST for continued employment.
Experience Requirements
  • Minimum of 6 months experience as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub tech position.
  • Preferred: 2 years experience in a similar role.
Education and Training
  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, military training, or Licensed Practical Nursing Program.
  • Preferred: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.
Additional Responsibilities and Requirements
  • Functions under RN or independent practitioner supervision, providing direct patient care, emotional support, and problem solving.
  • Requires prior approval for schedule changes, legal issues, deviation from standard care, or educational needs.
  • May involve handling medications and supplies.
  • Work hours include all shifts, weekends, and holidays, with schedules set by the Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator.
  • Participates in call rotations for routine and high-acuity cases.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Physical: Lifting 50-100 lbs, exposure to hazardous substances, prolonged standing and sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
  • Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
  • Emotional: Ability to work in a fast-paced, noisy environment, handle multiple priorities, and adapt to change.
Additional Notes

Rotating shifts and schedules are established with the employee's Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator. The position may require adjustments to meet staffing needs.
