Position Overview

The Surgical Technologist II (operating room scrub technician) is responsible for setting up the sterile field, gathering supplies based on knowledge of instruments and equipment, passing instruments to surgeons during surgery, and performing count procedures according to policy.

This role serves as a resource and preceptor to less experienced Surgical Technologists, takes call for routine and high-acuity cases after the orientation period, and learns, performs, and completes assigned responsibilities during the transitional duty period.

Licensure, Certification, and Registration Requirements
  • Registered by the State Board of Medicine.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C), or Certified Operating Room/Surgical Technician (CORST) certification.
  • Current AHA BLS and HCP Certification.
Experience and Education
  • Required: Minimum of 6 months experience as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub tech position.
  • Preferred: 2 years experience as a surgical technologist or related scrub technician.
  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, military training, or Licensed Practical Nursing Program.
  • Preferred: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.
Independent Actions and Responsibilities

Functions under the direction of RN or independent practitioner, providing direct patient care, emotional support, and problem solving in accordance with policies and procedures. Requires prior approval for schedule changes, legal issues, and deviations from standard care. May involve handling medications and supplies.

Work Schedule and Additional Requirements
  • Works all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules established with the Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator.
  • Participates in rotation and may be adjusted to meet staffing needs.
  • Provides independent call for cases after orientation.
  • Serves age-specific groups as appropriate based on transitional duty assignment.
Physical and Other Requirements
  • Physical: Lifting 50-100 lbs., prolonged standing and sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
  • Activities: Exposure to hazardous substances, frequent movement, and environmental noise.
  • Mental/Sensory: Recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, reading, and logical thinking.
  • Emotional: Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment, handle multiple priorities, and interact with customers effectively.
