Responsibilities
Under the direction of the healthcare provider, the Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for delivering patient care that promotes safety and wellbeing. Tasks include:
- Performing preliminary physical tests such as measuring blood pressure, recording weight, temperature, pulse, and respirations according to clinical protocols.
- Providing general patient care following established standards and procedures.
- Greeting and preparing patients for the healthcare provider.
- Obtaining and recording vital signs, allergies, medications, and presenting problems.
- Drawing blood samples and preparing specimens for lab analysis as required.
- Administering medications and vaccines via various routes as ordered.
- Performing routine tests including EKGs.
- Scheduling diagnostic tests and following up on their completion.
- Communicating test results and care plans to patients by phone or mail.
- Preparing, cleaning, sterilizing instruments, maintaining equipment, and ensuring exam rooms are stocked and clean.
- Documenting patient care, tests, and examination results in medical records.
- Escalating non-routine issues to the practice manager or healthcare providers.
- Ensuring safety checklists and quality controls are completed.
- Protecting patient safety and privacy rights.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the practice manager or healthcare providers.
Qualifications
Education and Licensure
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification required.
- Completion of Medication Aide 40-hour course or valid Medication Aide certification if applicable.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Care Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
Minimum Experience
- Preferred 1 year of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to perform EKGs, draw blood, and administer injections.
- Effective communication skills with staff and patients.
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment procedures.
- Understanding of medical terminology and abbreviations.
- Sound judgment and composure in emergency situations.
- Positive attitude towards patients.
- Proficiency with medical management software.
- Strong work ethic and professionalism.
