Responsibilities

Under the direction of the healthcare provider, the Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for delivering patient care that promotes safety and wellbeing. This includes performing preliminary physical tests such as measuring blood pressure, recording weight, temperature, pulse, and respirations, and other measures as directed by clinical protocols.

• Perform general patient care following established standards and procedures.
• Greet and prepare patients for the healthcare provider.
• Obtain and record vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, drug allergies, current medications, and presenting problems.
• Draw and collect blood samples and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis as required.
• Administer medications and vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, and inhalant routes as ordered.
• Perform routine tests such as EKGs.
• Schedule diagnostic tests and follow up to ensure completion.
• Communicate test results and care plans to patients by phone or mail as directed by the physician.
• Prepare, clean, and sterilize instruments; maintain equipment; keep exam rooms stocked, clean, and orderly; dispose of contaminated items per protocol.
• Document patient care plans, tests, and examination results in medical records as directed.
• Escalate non-routine issues to the practice manager or healthcare provider.
• Ensure safety checklists and quality controls are completed as required.

Additional duties include ensuring patient safety and privacy, and performing other tasks as assigned by management or healthcare providers.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One year of experience preferred.

Required Licensure and Certifications

• Current/valid Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification or approved equivalent at hire.
• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training

• Ability to perform EKGs, draw blood, and administer injections.
• Effective communication skills with staff and patients.
• Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment procedures.
• Understanding of medical terminology and abbreviations.
• Sound judgment and composure in emergency situations.
• Positive, caring attitude towards patients.
• Good computer skills with medical management applications.
• Strong work ethic and professionalism.
