Job summary

FedEx Freight in Schenectady, NY is seeking a CDL driver/dock associate to operate tractor-trailer combinations and perform related non-driving duties. You will conduct safety inspections, secure freight, and handle pallets and equipment on the dock.

Qualified applicants must hold a Class A CDL or CLP, pass MVR/DOT requirements, and demonstrate basic math, communication skills, and the ability to lift up to 100 pounds. Prior driving experience with freight operations is valued.

Qualifications

• Must hold a valid Class A CDL or CLP.
• Must pass Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
• Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the FMC regulations.
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day.
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week.
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training.
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks.
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment.
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer.
• Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including, but not limited to, forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck.
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including, but not limited to, pallets, straps, and rope.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation, as required.
• Comply with hazardous material regulations and company procedures, and confirm placarding matches hazmat shipments, as required.
• Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding events including, but not limited to, delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc., as required.
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service.
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs.
• Ask customers for additional business, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities.
• Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler
• Chain vehicle tires, as required
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
• Perform other duties as required
