Job summary

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highway Maintenance – District 5, has a full-time vacancy for Highway Maintainer III. This role operates and maintains heavy highway equipment for winter and year-round tasks, supervises entry-level crews, and ensures safety and compliance with DOT standards.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, a CDL-A with tank endorsement, and an ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

• Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after completion of high school.
• Valid CDL, Class A with tank endorsement.
• MVR must meet minimum standards as established by the Department of Transportation.
• Pre-employment drug screen is required per DOT rules.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. intermittently.
• Trainee option available with CDL-B to upgrade within 1 year.

Responsibilities

• Operates and troubleshoots highway maintenance equipment and machinery.
• Maintains and repairs assigned equipment; reports issues to supervisor.
• Responds to winter maintenance and traffic emergencies 24/7 as required.
• Supervises entry-level workers and ensures safety/environmental practices.
• Performs road maintenance tasks under challenging conditions, including high-speed traffic.
• Must be available by phone and/or communications device at all times.
