Job summary

EVP EyeCare in Mesa, AZ is seeking a Surgical Counselor to educate patients on cataract and LASIK surgery, guiding them through scheduling, documentation, and pre-certification steps. The role includes coordination of pre-certification with insurance, discussing funding options, and ensuring smooth patient flow on the surgical day.

Responsibilities include setting dates, collecting paperwork, handling post-op communications, and creating medical documentation as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least two years of work experience in a medical office setting.
• Kindness, empathy and patience when dealing with patients.
• Attention to detail.
• Comfortable with the sales aspect of specialty lenses.
• Ability to multi-task and work as a team member.
• Requires skills in operating computers, EHR, word processing software, fax machines and copiers.
• Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

• Counsel and educate the patient about upcoming surgery and lens options.
• Set surgery dates, including post-surgical/treatment appointments.
• Send necessary paperwork to authorization specialist for eligibility, benefits and authorization.
• Confirm pre-certification from insurance carriers received prior to procedure.
• Discuss implant options and self-pay fees including financing options.
• Collect co-insurance or co-pays when applicable.
• Issue refunds for cancelled surgeries.
• Create H&Ps.
• Send for Medical or Retinal clearance as necessary.
• Obtain eyelid surgery authorizations.
• Answer patient calls.
• Send surgery operative notes and post-op documents to referring Optometrists.
