Job summary

EVP Eyecare is seeking a Surgical Counselor to educate patients on cataract, LASIK, and refractive procedures, present premium lens options, and assist with financing and insurance requirements. This position is responsible for educating patients throughout the surgical journey, coordinating all aspects of surgical scheduling, discussing premium lens and refractive treatment options, assisting with financing and insurance requirements, and delivering an exceptional patient experience. Working closely with physicians, technicians, referring providers, and administrative staff, the Surgical Counselor ensures patients receive compassionate guidance from consultation through post-operative care while supporting practice growth through consultative sales and relationship building.ResponsibilitiesEducate and counsel patients regarding cataract, LASIK, refractive procedures, premium intraocular lens options, and expected surgical outcomes.Build strong relationships with prospective and existing patients by providing personalized education and guidance throughout the surgical process.Conduct patient consultations, answer questions, and provide educational materials to support informed treatment decisions.Discuss premium lens options, refractive management packages, and available financing solutions while explaining associated costs and benefits.Convert qualified consultation and screening candidates into scheduled examinations and surgical procedures while meeting established performance goals.Schedule surgical procedures and coordinate all pre-operative and post-operative appointments.Perform patient follow-up through phone calls, text messages, and email to maintain engagement and encourage treatment completion.Verify insurance eligibility, obtain prior authorizations and pre-certifications, and ensure required documentation is completed before surgery.Prepare and maintain accurate patient records, surgical documentation, history and physical forms, and electronic health records.Coordinate medical and retinal clearances, referrals, and communication with referring optometrists and other healthcare providers.Collect co-pays, co-insurance, specialty lens fees, and other patient payments while assisting patients with financing options and processing refunds when appropriate.Perform required pre-operative testing in accordance with established clinical protocols.Maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient confidentiality at all times.Collaborate with physicians, technicians, clinic leadership, and administrative staff to ensure seamless patient care.Support outreach initiatives by maintaining relationships with referring providers and participating in community events and practice marketing activities as appropriate.Maintain a professional, organized work environment and perform additional duties as assigned.RequirementsExcellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills with the ability to educate, motivate, and build trust with patients.Strong consultative sales skills with the ability to discuss premium surgical options, financing, and treatment recommendations.Knowledge of cataract surgery, LASIK, refractive procedures, ophthalmic terminology, and medical office workflows.Experience with insurance verification, prior authorizations, pre-certifications, and medical documentation.Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.Proficiency with electronic health records, practice management software, Microsoft Office, and other computer applications.Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as a collaborative team member.Professional demeanor with a commitment to delivering outstanding customer service and patient care.Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.Bilingual Spanish is preferred.Education and ExperienceCollege degree including business-related courses (sales/marketing emphasis preferred)Two years of proven sales experience**Plus bonus structure**
