The Cashier is custodian of cash receipts and incoming payments. This position is also responsible for receiving payments from internal and external customers. Strong customer service skills are vital.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Daily interaction with internal and external constituents including students, faculty, staff, and vendors.
  2. Assists customers in person and via phone with regard to student accounts.
  3. Computes or re-computes bill, itemized lists, and tickets showing amount due.
  4. Receives and posts payments (cash, checks, debit card and credit card transactions), makes change, cashes checks, issues receipts, and prepares statements/billings.
  5. Verifies all petty cash transactions comply with University policies and procedures, disburses petty cash, reconciles and prepares weekly report of petty cash transactions.
  6. Prepares outside scholarships for deposit and disbursement.
  7. Maintain files and contacts students regarding insufficient funds checks, returned mail, etc.
  8. Opens, logs, stamps, and distributes mail received for the office to the appropriate individuals.
  9. Opens/closes cashier window each day by balancing daily transactions, retrieving/securing money and checks in vault, settling batch credit card transactions, and settling online payment transactions, etc.
  10. Closely monitors payment plan accounts and interacts with students regarding student account balances, payments, delinquencies, etc.
  11. Verifies, prepares and enters University and departmental deposits.
  12. Disburses weekly Accounts Payable checks.
  13. Scans, maintains and electronically files confidential student records.
  14. Cross trains to assist other positions within the office with various tasks, as needed.
  15. Orders supplies for office.
  16. Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licenses

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Prior cashiering experience is preferred.

Exceptional customer service skills, organizational skills and positive attitude required.   • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, parents, and employees of the university.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure (including money, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals).
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to operate a cash register, credit/debit card machine, an adding machine and other office machinery (such as copier, fax, etc.).
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard to access student account records.
  • Must be able to learn the unique computer software system to access student accounts.
  • Must be able to work some evening schedules during peak enrollment periods.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Must be able to model and work in a positive team-oriented manner with a variety of people (students, students' family members, faculty, administrators, staff, vendors, and members of the public).
