The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The division's responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility, and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The Office of Livable Streets (OLS) focuses on strategic planning, community engagement, research, policy, design, implementation, and long-term management. Its goal is to create livable streets that support safety, accessibility, inclusion, resiliency, active modes, community cohesion, and economic vitality across the city. They aim to enhance NYC's pedestrian, bicycle, and micromobility networks, providing comfortable, connected, green, and reliable transportation options. The office emphasizes Priority Investment Areas, mode shift, and reimagining streets, developing innovative programs, design typologies, project delivery, and analysis tools to meet evolving community needs and technologies.

OLs is seeking a motivated Project Coordinator / Associate Urban Designer for its Public Realm Unit within the Office of Livable Streets. This multidisciplinary unit is responsible for engaging New Yorkers to reimagine city streets as public spaces and oversees programs, policies, projects, and management tools to enhance the public realm, primarily for pedestrians. Initiatives include the Pedestrian Mobility Plan, Public Space Programming, Public Space Equity Program, Open Streets, Super Sidewalks, Street Seats, Complex Intersections, Shared Streets, and Plazas. The successful candidate will develop and implement pedestrian-centered interim and capital projects, leading project development from research and analysis through public engagement and recommendations.

Responsibilities include creating public presentations, managing project priorities and schedules, coordinating with local partners, and overseeing implementation. A thorough understanding of street design impacts beyond safety and how streets can foster community is essential. The candidate will collaborate with community partners and stakeholders, designing streets based on immediate and long-term community needs, conducting data gathering (traffic, crash data, field conditions, parking regulations, community characteristics), and producing CAD drawings to illustrate traffic conditions. Recommendations will be grounded in current traffic calming and streetscape design practices, coordinating with DOT units, city agencies, and community groups. Skills in design, photography, and graphics are required to effectively communicate proposals.

The role demands knowledge of contemporary design and planning theories, public realm maintenance, operational demands in dense urban environments, and the ability to work independently or collaboratively. Supervisory responsibilities may include interns and support staff. The candidate should be detail-oriented, accurate, a team player, and maintain a positive attitude. Effective verbal and written communication, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration with contractors are also vital.

• This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week under the Remote Work Pilot Program.
• Work Location: 55 Water Street, 6th Floor, NYC.
• Hours: 35 hours/week, 9 am to 5 pm.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree in architecture from an accredited institution and two years of related experience, or
2. An equivalent combination of education and experience, with a baccalaureate degree in architecture required. Graduate work in architecture, urban design, or city planning may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
