Department: Operations Planning – NYCT – Support Agency

Location: 2 Broadway, New York, NY, 10004

Position Title: Bus Service Planning, Emerging Talent Intern

Hourly Rate: $21.00 (Graduate)

All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.

OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT:

The Bus Service Planning unit reviews and plans short-term and long-term changes to MTA’s bus routes and stops. We review public and stakeholder feedback, collaborate with NYCDOT on bus priority, and develop large-scale Bus Network Redesign plans.

For the 2026 budget cycle, Bus Service Planning college aides will support full-time staff members with changes to the current bus network by supporting with fieldwork, data analysis, mapping, and presentations. College aides will also support the Bus Network Redesign projects by assisting with post-implementation evaluation for Queens Redesign, which will include data analysis and mapping. They will also support the Brooklyn Redesign project with Revised Draft Plan public outreach preparations which include developing maps, graphics and presentations. They will also support the Manhattan Redesign project by supporting with fieldwork, data analysis, mapping and presentations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical assistance for improving bus service in New York City.
  • Perform in-depth data collection and analysis to evaluate current and future bus service.
  • Make or evaluate proposals to adjust bus stops for better service or to better accommodate adjoining land use.
  • Develop maps and graphics to synthesize complex data and concepts for a non-technical audience.
  • Review and respond to public and stakeholder feedback on Bus Network Redesign plans.
  • Participate in public outreach efforts, including on-street engagement, presenting at public meetings, and implementing route changes and/or bus priority projects.
  • Collaborate with other MTA departments, other public agencies or outside organizations, and elected officials and other stakeholders.
  • Perform various fieldwork assignments as needed.

PROJECTS:

  • Develop post-implementation evaluation materials for Queens Redesign.
  • Correct and update bus stop database records for Brooklyn Redesign, as well as develop maps, graphics, and presentations.
  • Develop maps and graphics and take on data analysis tasks for Manhattan Redesign.
  • Support Brooklyn/Queens/Staten Island and Manhattan/Bronx/SBS planners with data analysis, stop and routing review, and mapping.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency working with a variety of data sources, including large datasets.
  • Familiarity with transit/transportation systems, particularly the NYCT subway and bus network, and the geography of New York City.
  • An understanding of general transportation and land use planning concepts, including street design to accommodate different street users including buses, bicycles, and pedestrians.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must.
  • The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.

Qualified candidates will also have one or more of the following technical skills:

  • Experience using ArcGIS or ArcGIS Pro for mapping and geospatial analysis.
  • Experience using Adobe software to develop maps and graphics.
  • Experience with conducting data analysis using Excel, Python or other program.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least 2.8 GPA
  • Major(s) Preferred: Pursuing a Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Service, Geography, Engineering, or related field.
