Job summary

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company is seeking an Underwriter in Brokerage Casualty (E&S/Specialty) to determine risk acceptability, pricing, and terms for basic to moderately complex risks. You’ll analyze risks, reviews claims history, and collaborate with agents and reinsurers to meet production and loss ratio goals.

The role emphasizes strong communication, understanding of rating plans, and potential underwriting authority as you gain experience.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate studies preferred or equivalent work experience.
• Completion of general insurance courses such as IIA 21, 22, 23, CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred.
• Four years related experience or prior experience as an underwriting assistant or rater is preferred.
• Knowledge of business and insurance concepts and effective communication skills are required.

Responsibilities

• Reviews risks from brokers and decides to decline or accept based on information available.
• Achieves production and loss ratio goals through broker management and marketing.
• Handles policy maintenance items and mid-term requests, reviews endorsements and processes changes.
• Develops positive relationships with brokers and may travel to broker offices for training or marketing visits.
• Continuously develops technical and business knowledge through internal and external venues.
