Job summary

State of South Carolina is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to support bridge construction, repair, and maintenance on the state highway system. You will operate backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, and other machinery, performing concrete work and coordinating traffic control for safe work zones.

This full-time role requires a valid driver’s license, a Class A CDL within six months, and the ability to work extended hours or 12-hour shifts, including during inclement weather.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience or equivalent.
• Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required within six months.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy-duty equipment for bridge construction, repair, and cleaning on the state highway system.
• Performs skilled manual labor in bridge construction and repair, including concrete work.
• Safely uses hand and power tools such as saws, drills, grinders and torches.
• Inspects equipment and completes daily vehicle checklists.
• Coordinates traffic control devices to establish work zones per the SCDOT manual.
• May work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Supports weather and emergency operations.
