Job description

Bookkeeper — Full Time

Family Violence Project (FVP) is working to end domestic violence in Kennebec and Somerset counties in Maine. We believe it will take the whole community to accomplish our mission. This includes a strong and committed, diverse workforce. If you are seeking a challenging position in a critical field of advocacy and social justice, please consider the following open position:

The Family Violence Project seeks a full-time Bookkeeper for our Augusta office. In this role, you will provide critical accounting support by computing, classifying, recording, and summarizing financial data to maintain fiscal records according to GAAP standards and established bookkeeping procedures. Core financial responsibilities include maintaining daily transactions, posting entries, updating the general ledger, processing timesheets, running payroll, and assisting with the annual audit.

Additionally, the Bookkeeper will manage accurate employee records, organizational files, and records management systems. This role also provides essential administrative support by overseeing general office workflows, answering and directing phone calls, greeting visitors, and managing office operations including supplies, vendor relationships, and equipment. Because of the nature of our work, maintaining the confidentiality of all personnel records and client-related materials is an integral part of this position.

This is full-time, 32-hour per week non-exempt position with a Monday through Thursday, 8:30am to 5:00pm schedule; each day includes a half-hour unpaid lunch break. Excellent benefits are provided for the employee, including free health insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance. Vision, dental and supplemental insurances, as well as health insurance for dependents, are available at cost. Benefits also include paid time off (beginning with three weeks of accrued time per year), fourteen paid holidays each year, and a 403(b)-retirement plan with an employer match. The starting pay range for this position is $37,024 annually ($22.25 per hour) to $44,428 annually ($26.70 per hour), based on experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb stairs, sit (including prolonged sitting), talk, and listen. The employee is also required to operate a computer using a standard keyboard and mouse; use a fax machine, printer, scanner, and copier; and communicate using a telephone. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

The ideal candidate will possess two to four years of experience in bookkeeping, office administration, or a related capacity, preferably within a nonprofit organization. A strong understanding of bookkeeping principles and practices is essential, alongside proficiency in Sage or QuickBooks accounting platforms and the Microsoft 365 suite (specifically Outlook, Excel, and Word). Applicants should also have hands-on experience and comfort with everyday office equipment, including computers, multifunction printers, postage machines, and phone systems. Beyond technical capabilities, this role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to independently prioritize tasks and complete work with minimal supervision. The successful candidate will maintain a collaborative, harmonious approach to working with others, demonstrating excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills. While an associate degree in accounting or a related field is preferred, an equivalent combination of professional experience and education will be fully considered.

A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required for this position. Applicants must undergo fingerprinting upon hire and pass state and federal criminal history checks, as well as checks done through sex offender registries, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and the Department of Health and Human Services, among others. All new employees are required to participate in a thorough orientation process which includes successful completion of Family Violence Project’s Crisis Advocacy, Intervention, Response and Ethics Training for New Advocates.

Equal Opportunity Employer
