Job summary

Community Concepts Maine is seeking a Controller to join the Finance Team in Lewiston. The Controller leads accounting operations, maintains general ledger, manages grant accounting, and ensures compliance under applicable laws and standards.

Reports to the CFO and oversees day-to-day financial activities across GL, AR, AP, and reporting. This full-time role requires a BS in Accounting/Finance, 5–7 years of leadership experience, and strong proficiency with MS Excel, Word, and accounting

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (preferred).
• 5–7 years of leadership/managerial experience in accounting or finance roles.
• Proficient with MS Excel and Word and common accounting software.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting.
• Develop, manage, and monitor program budgets and internal controls.
• Direct GL, AR, AP and grant accounting to guide financial decisions.
• Oversee funding from multiple sources (Head Start/CSBG/HUD etc.).
• Ensure timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting and reconciliations.
• Support auditors and collaborate with staff to improve financial processes.

Job description

Community Concepts, a Maine nonprofit that provides resources to help people move forward, is seeking a controller to join the Finance Team.

The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of the accounting operations and financial reporting, ensuring accurate financial records, internal controls, grant accounting, maintaining general ledger, and compliance. This is a full-time position, working in our Lewiston Office, and reports directly to the CFO.

• Starting Pay Range: $43.00-46.00 per hour, depending on education and experience

Some Essential Duties

• Developing and managing program budgets, typical managerial duties, supervising staff, and ensuring all laws, regulations, requirements, and standards are adhered to.
• Develop, maintain, and monitor effective internal controls that safeguard assets and ensure compliance.
• Direct all accounting operations (GL, AR, AP) to guide financial decisions and activities.
• Oversee fiscal management of multiple federal, state, local, and private funding sources, including but not limited to Head Start/Early Head Start, CSBG, LIHEAP/HEAP, HUD, USDA, MaineHousing, DHHS Contracts, etc.
• Ensure timely and accurate reporting, including but not limited to monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting, cash flow, and balance sheet reconciliation reporting.
• Support Agency financial functioning through reporting, research, analysis, and automation of financial operations, as well as partnering with the agency's independent auditors and all organizational staff.

Desired Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, and/or certified by the State Board of Certified Public Accountants preferred.
• 5-7 years of related work experience in a leadership and managerial position.
• Computer literacy is a must, including Microsoft Excel & Word, and accounting software.
• Other Requirements:**Strong understanding of fiscal policy; create usable budgets for the business; hire and oversee the members on the Finance Team; a continuous improvement mindset; offer advice to the CFO and CEO regarding spending and budget questions; comfortable with interacting with a Finance Committee/Board, detail oriented, ability to manage/lead multiple financial projects; ability to inspire a team; written and verbal communication must be able to explain financial concepts to non-financial staff; promptly and accurately find solutions to financial related challenges.
