Job summary

Howard County Library System seeks a bilingual (English/Spanish) Children’s Instructor and Research Specialist for the Elkridge Branch. You will create bilingual curricula, teach classes for infants to 5th graders, and deliver high-quality research assistance to the public.

You’ll engage the community through STEM-focused lessons, tours, and events, while maintaining collections and supporting technology use. This part-time role offers a collaborative environment and benefits.

Qualifications

• Four-year college degree required.
• Demonstrated ability to work with staff and customers of various races and ethnicities.
• Exceptional customer service skills.
• Experience teaching children with enthusiastic, friendly demeanor.
• Passion for working with the public, especially children.
• Positive, adaptable, and forward-thinking.
• Diplomacy and sound judgment in interactions.

Responsibilities

• Develop a bilingual, community-driven curriculum for children's classes.
• Prepare and teach children's classes (infants–5th grade).
• Provide thorough research assistance to the public.
• Maintain attractive, current collection displays and assist with shelf-reading.
• Assist customers with basic computer skills and e-resources, including copy/fax.
• Offer reading/viewing/listening recommendations and connect customers with information.
• Deliver excellent customer service and reference know-how.
• Work across HCLS Customer Service or Research Desks as needed.
• Host branch tours, sharing services and event knowledge.
• Promote community events and awareness of HCLS resources (e-resources, Chromebooks, hotspots).
• Teach STEM education classes and engage in education programs at schools.
• Participate in LATI training if required.
• Attend to duties outside operating hours for events.
