Job summary

New LHRC External Career Site is seeking a Benefit Programs Specialist I/II, bilingual-Spanish highly preferred, to determine eligibility for a variety of social services programs in Virginia. The position may be filled as BPSI or BPSII depending on the recruitment.

BPSI is entry level, while BPSII handles full-performance eligibility determinations for financial assistance, food stamps, medical assistance, and other benefits.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of basic human behavior and ability to apply math to percentage calculations.
• Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills required.
• Ability to interview, gather information, re-evaluate situations, and make referrals.

Responsibilities

• Interview applicants and determine continuing eligibility.
• Explain benefit programs and assess need for assistance.
• Process applications for financial assistance and diversion.
• Determine eligibility and benefit levels using automated and manual methods.
• Monitor cases for changes and reflect updates within guidelines.
• Identify fraud and make appropriate referrals.
• Maintain client records and prepare reports.
• Explain programs and rights; connect to other agencies as needed.
