Job summary

The Virginia Department of Social Services is seeking an entry-level Benefit Programs Specialist I to train under supervision while learning to determine eligibility for a range of state and federal assistance programs.

Under close supervision, you will interview clients, explain program options, process applications, and compute benefit plans, with opportunities for promotion to Specialist II after successful training and evaluation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with related training or experience.
• Strong interviewing and data collection abilities.
• Ability to determine eligibility for financial assistance programs.
• Understanding of confidentiality and professional ethics.

Responsibilities

• Interviews clients to determine eligibility for assistance.
• Explains program benefits and reasons for assistance.
• Processes applications for financial assistance.
• Checks data completeness and accuracy.
• Computes assistance plans.
• Determines allowances for special circumstances.
• Assesses education, work history, and social functioning.
