Job summary

Joby Aviation is seeking a Battery Safety Simulation & Test Engineer in San Carlos to develop coupled electrochemical, thermal, and gas-generation models. Qualifications

• BS + 3 years of experience in mechanical engineering, thermals, physics, or related field.
• Strong understanding of cell / battery hazards and failure modes.
• Foundation in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and electrical engineering.
• Willingness to perform hands-on test execution from planning to cleanup.
• Understanding of sensing and data acquisition principles.
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop coupled electrochemical, thermal, and gas-generation cell models to inform design parameters.
• Perform thermal analysis and simulations to evaluate performance under abuse scenarios.
• Own test planning, design, and execution for battery performance and safety.
• Correlate simulation results with experimental data and refine models.
• Set up and maintain complex test equipment (electrical, mechanical, fluid, data acquisition).
• Drive data-driven insights and lead cross-functional efforts across battery and certification teams.
• Support certification by conducting tests and documenting results.
