Job summary

Joby Aviation is seeking a Senior/Staff Embedded Software Engineer for battery systems (BMS and charging) in San Carlos, CA. You will develop safety-critical embedded C++ software for battery management and ground support equipment, contribute to architecture, and verify behavior across live systems.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to decompose requirements, implement robust interfaces, and drive testing, documentation, and certification activities for real aircraft use.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related STEM field with 8+ years of experience, OR Master’s with 6+ years, OR PhD with 3+ years.
• Expert-level modern C++ and real-time OS and/or embedded Linux.
• Experience delivering embedded software projects from concept to completion.
• Deep understanding of microcontroller/microprocessor architectures and debugging embedded targets.
• Networking/communications experience (Ethernet/UDP/TCP, CAN).
• Experience with design/code reviews and mentoring.
• Experience with Python.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement embedded C++ software for the BMS and BGSE domains.
• Contribute to software architecture and roadmaps; collaborate with systems, hardware, and algorithm teams.
• Integrate algorithms into production embedded software and validate interfaces.
• Lead architecture decisions, scoping workstreams, and maintain schedule.
• Ensure certification readiness through thorough verification and documentation.
