  • Category: Powertrain & Electronics, Engineering
  • Type: Regular Full-Time
Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a hands-on engineer with strong fundamentals to join our Battery Safety team as a Battery Test Systems Engineer. As a key member of this high performing team, you will have a variety of responsibilities. You will primarily own the design, integration, and data automation of custom test equipment that will be used for both certification and the development of current and next generation propulsion batteries. Additionally, you will support the expansion of the team’s testing labs to ensure continuous improvement and the development of new capabilities. This work will be crucial for making our batteries the safest in the industry.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and deploy custom electromechanical test equipment, integrating with high-voltage batteries and data acquisition (DAQ) hardware to support continuous battery safety development
  • Develop, maintain, and execute battery safety and cell lab's expansion plans to cover continuous improvement and new R&D/certification needs
  • Collaborate with data, cell, and battery safety teams to architect robust data pipelines and interactive dashboards, enabling real-time querying, automated reporting, and accelerated decision-making
  • Maintain comprehensive hardware/software documentation and equipment compliance, ensuring battery safety lab operations continuously align with certification requirements and local municipal permitting standards (building, electrical, fire, and air)
  • Execute battery and cell testing in support of battery system development and certification
  • Support certification efforts across all programs by developing and maintaining meticulous documentation of test equipment
Required
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience OR Advacned degree and 3+ year of experience in mechanical engineering, thermals, physics, or related field
  • Basic understanding of battery hazards and failure modes (e.g., thermal runaway, electrical shorts, mechanical abuse)
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and foundation in mechanical and electrical engineering fundamentals
  • Fundamental understanding of sensing and data acquisition principles
  • Willingness to get hands dirty and work with team-members on all levels of project, from planning to final cleanup
  • CAD experience, CATIA preferred
  • Python or other language for data processing and visualization
  • Great written, verbal, and presentation skills
Desired
  • Advanced degree in a relevant engineering or science field and 8+ years of experience
  • Knowledge of li-ion cell technology and experience with battery testing/design
  • Experience developing and maintaining data pipelines and custom visualization dashboards or analysis tools
  • Experience working with abuse testing at cell/module/pack levels and familiarity with safety testing standards such as UN 38.3, SAE 2464, RTCA DO-311
  • LabVIEW or other language for interfacing with data acquisition hardware
  • Familiarity working with high voltage systems
  • Hands-on experience designing and commissioning battery test equipment (e.g., Arbin, Maccor, Neware) including fixture and instrumentation design
