Job summary

Joby is seeking a Senior Test Equipment Design Engineer for the Powertrain & Electronics group in San Carlos, CA. This hands-on role covers the full lifecycle from concept to formal release, ensuring flight-critical test setups and HIL systems meet program milestones.

You will work with Airframe/Actuators, Propulsion, Avionics, and Software teams, overseeing design, build, integration, and documentation while maintaining safety and quality standards in a lab/shop environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related field with 8+ years of relevant experience.
• Strong mechanical design experience, including heavily loaded, high-precision components, weldments, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
• Hands-on machine shop skills (lathe, mill, welder) and CAD-based design experience.
• Proficiency with CAD tools and electrical schematic design.
• Experience with machine control panel wiring and design.
• Track record taking projects from concept through commissioning.

Responsibilities

• Architect test fixturing and mechanical layout from evolving requirements.
• Design hardware to assemble, install, and validate flight-critical components and systems.
• Create test stands and fixtures for electrical, thermal, static, and dynamic testing.
• Develop drawing packages, BOMs, and assembly instructions; procure hardware.
• Lead integration and commissioning; troubleshoot test system issues.
• Prepare BOMs, drawings, and documentation for formal release and FAA-related compliance.
