Job summary

Leidos is seeking an Autonomous Systems Software Engineer to build the brains behind unmanned underwater vehicles and maritime autonomous systems. You will design, write, and deploy production software that controls autonomy, vehicle health, and mission execution on real hardware in challenging environments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field with 12-15 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 10-13 years of experience.
  • Security eligibility: Must have a current Secret clearance.
  • Strong modern C++ skills on Linux with performance and memory management fundamentals.
  • Engineering judgment to design clean, maintainable systems under real constraints.
  • Systems awareness and MBSE concepts; familiarity with Cameo, MagicDraw.
  • Experience in virtualized or containerized environments (VMware, Docker).
  • Delivery mindset with Agile/iterative development and tools like Jira/Confluence/Bitbucket.

Responsibilities

  • Build mission-critical autonomy software using modern C++ and Python on Linux-based systems.
  • Translate high-level system intent into executable software and modular architectures.
  • Architect and evolve scalable autonomy frameworks across multiple vehicle platforms.
  • Ship real features with ownership from design through deployment.
  • Collaborate in design reviews and trade studies to resolve constraints.
  • Mentor junior engineers and raise the bar for technical rigor.
  • Own quality with unit/integration tests and root-cause analysis.
  • Work with systems, hardware, and test teams to ensure correct behavior.
  • Continuously improve build tools, workflows, and processes in an Agile environment.
