Job summary

Leidos is seeking an Autonomous Systems Software Engineer to build the brains behind unmanned underwater vehicles and maritime autonomous systems. You’ll design, write, and deploy production software that directly controls autonomous behavior, vehicle health, and mission execution on real hardware.

This role emphasizes ownership, fast iteration with bounded risk, and collaboration across systems, hardware, and test engineers in an Agile environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field with 12-15 years of experience
  • Master’s degree with 10-13 years of experience
  • Must have current Secret clearance
  • Strong modern C++ skills on Linux with performance and memory basics
  • Ability to design clean, maintainable systems under real constraints
  • Familiarity with MBSE concepts/tools (Cameo, MagicDraw) and software in larger architectures
  • Experience in virtualized/containerized environments (VMware, Docker)
  • Experience in Agile/iterative development with Jira/Confluence/Bitbucket
  • Clear communication and professional integrity

Responsibilities

  • Build mission-critical autonomy software using modern C++ and Python on Linux-based systems in constrained environments
  • Translate system intent into executable software and break down autonomy/vehicle requirements
  • Architect and evolve scalable autonomy frameworks with modular, high-performance design
  • Ship real features with ownership from design through deployment
  • Collaborate in design reviews and trade studies to resolve real constraints
  • Mentor junior engineers and raise technical rigor
  • Own quality with unit/integration tests and root-cause analysis
  • Work with systems, hardware, and test engineers to ensure correct behavior in real-world systems
  • Continuously improve build tools/workflows in an Agile environment
