Qualifications

  • Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade; or completion of an approved apprenticeship; or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required; Class 1 Inspection Mechanic certificate or equivalent that allows inspection for Class 1 vehicles.
  • Possession of a CFC-12 Refrigerant Recycling Certificate and a 134A Refrigerant Recycling Certificate, obtainable after hire.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment repair on cars, trucks, tractors, construction equipment, and powered hand tools.
  • Preventive maintenance including oil changes, diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, and system adjustments on gasoline and diesel equipment.
  • State inspections: official safety and emissions inspections and complete required documentation.
  • Diesel servicing: replacing filters, pumps, gaskets, and related components on diesel equipment.
  • Field work: emergency road service and maintenance at county stockpiles as needed.
  • Safety practices: maintain a safe work area and report injuries or hazards promptly.

Job description

The Automotive Mechanic position with the Department of Transportation in Luzerne County offers a hands-on opportunity to build strong technical skills. This role allows you to work on many types of vehicles and equipment that keep transportation operations moving. This position focuses on maintaining and repairing vehicles, equipment, and hand tools essential to county transportation operations. As an Automotive Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Repair: Perform skilled repairs on cars, trucks, tractors, construction equipment, and powered hand tools
  • Preventive Maintenance: Complete oil changes, diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, and system adjustments on gasoline and diesel equipment
  • State Inspections: Conduct official safety and emissions inspections and complete required documentation and repair verification
  • Diesel Servicing: Carry out service tasks on diesel equipment including replacing filters, pumps, gaskets, and related components
  • Field Work: Perform emergency road service and complete maintenance tasks at county stockpiles when required
  • Safety Practices: Maintain a safe work area, follow protective procedures, and report injuries or hazards promptly
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Schedule is subject to change based on weather/season. Winter shifts are 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade; or completion of an approved apprenticeship; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of a valid driver's license which is not under suspension.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Class 1 Inspection Mechanic certificate or equivalent that allows inspection for Class 1 vehicles.
  • This position will require possession of a CFC-12 Refrigerant Recycling Certificate and a 134A Refrigerant Recycling Certificate, which can be obtained after hire.
Additional Requirements:
  • You must provide your own mechanics toolbox and basic tool set.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
