Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation is seeking an Automotive Mechanic to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on a range of vehicles and equipment. You will support field locations with on-site maintenance and emergency repairs, ensuring safety and reliable service for transportation operations.

The role requires four years of experience or an approved apprenticeship, plus PA licensing including Class C and Class 1 Inspection certification.

Qualifications

  • Four years of automotive mechanic experience or completion of an approved apprenticeship.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Class C driver's license and Class 1 Inspection Mechanic certificate or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain cars, trucks, tractors, construction equipment and powered hand tools.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes and system repairs.
  • Carry out official state safety and emissions inspections and document results.
  • Provide emergency repairs, road service, and on-site maintenance as needed.
  • Procure parts and advise on proper components and purchasing.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area and follow safety procedures.

Job description

As an Automotive Mechanic for the Department of Transportation, you will support critical repair and maintenance work on trucks, tools, and construction equipment. This position performs preventive maintenance and repair on a wide range of vehicles, tools, and equipment used in transportation operations. The role supports safe operation, dependable service, and proper care of both gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. As an Automotive Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Repair: Perform skilled maintenance and repairs on cars, trucks, tractors, construction equipment, and powered hand tools
  • Preventive Service: Carry out routine maintenance including diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, and system repairs
  • Safety Inspection: Complete official state safety and emissions inspections and document results according to requirements
  • Field Support: Provide emergency repairs, road service, and on-site maintenance at field locations when needed
  • Parts Management: Obtain parts and supplies and provide information to ensure proper components are purchased
  • Workplace Safety: Maintain a clean and safe work area and follow procedures to prevent injuries and equipment damage
Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Hours subject to change due to weather or season
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $49,819.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements
  • Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements
  • This position requires possession of a current and valid Pennsylvania Class C driver's license.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Class 1 Inspection Mechanic certificate or equivalent that allows inspection for Class 1 vehicles.
