Job summary

Talladega College in Talladega, AL, seeks an Academic Advisor for Athletic Student Retention to support undergraduate student-athletes balancing academics and sports.

Responsibilities include advising, registration assistance, teaching Freshman Orientation, and coordinating referrals; required Master's in Kinesiology with NAIA knowledge; 40 hours/week on-site.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise and Sport Psychology or related field.
• 2 years of experience as an Academic Advisor for Athletic Student Retention or similar duties.
• Experience with NAIA, NCAA or NJCAA regulations; FERPA and HIPAA laws.

Responsibilities

• Deliver interactional academic advising experiences for assigned students, including specialized advising for student-athletes.
• Assist with registration and degree planning; ensure understanding of degree and general education requirements.
• Teach undergraduate Freshman Orientation 1-credit course each semester and other courses as needed.
• Make referrals to counseling, financial aid, career services, student life, and disability services, collaborating with athletic department staff.
• Stay current on NAIA regulations and high-impact practices related to academic advising and student success.
• Complete all other duties to promote the College's mission and values.

Academic Advisor for Athletic Student Retention

Job Duties

Deliver interactional academic advising experiences for assigned students, including specialized advising for student-athletes to help them balance academic and athletic commitments. Provide supplemental advising and registration assistance to all current undergraduate students, with particular attention to NAIA eligibility requirements for student-athletes. Ensure students understand and navigate the class registration process, understand degree and general education requirements, and are aware of academic policies related to athletic participation. Teach the undergraduate Freshman Orientation 1-credit course each semester and any other undergraduate course as needed to support academic success initiatives including but not limited to guidance, counseling. Address all areas of academic concerns with students, including tutoring, study skills, and time management, and connect student-athletes with appropriate academic support resources within the athletic department and broader university. Make referrals to other points of service such as counseling, financial aid, career services, student life, and disability services, collaborating closely with athletic department staff as needed. Participate in professional development opportunities, staying current on best practices in athletic advising and NAIA regulations. Remain current in high impact practices as related to academic advising, student success, and higher education. Contribute to the success of the department by completing all other duties as needed to promote the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the College.

Education and Experience Requirements

Master's degree or foreign equivalent in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise and Sport Psychology or related field with 2 years of experience as an Academic Advisor for Athletic Student Retention[1] , ___, or similar duties under a different job title.

Specific skills or other requirements

Experience to include 2 years in: academic advising student athletes and developing personalized degree plans; working with NAIA, NCAA or NJCAA regulations and ensuring student athletes meet requirements; working with FERPA and HIPAA laws; and working with first generation at-risk students. Demonstrated ability to teach as shown by a seminar presentation or teaching experience.
