Academic Advisor
Job Description
The Academic Advisor plays a vital role in supporting studentsuccess by providing comprehensive and proactive student-centeredacademic advising to new freshmen, undecided transfer students,at-risk students, and other designated student populations. Thisposition empowers students to make informed academic decisions,develop educational plans, and successfully navigate universitypolicies, procedures, and resources. Through individualizedadvising, registration support, and campus collaboration, thisposition promotes student success, retention, and timely degreecompletion while fostering an inclusive and supporting learningenvironment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
- Advises undecided, high risk, new freshmen, undecided transferstudents, and other special populations
- Monitors and advises students to ensure satisfactory grades andGPA requirements, students understand academic policies, as well ascourse planning/registration
- Develops workshops for a variety of student groups; preparesand makes presentations for Registration Days, Griffon Edge andother on –campus groups
- Maintains professional contacts and an awareness of bestpractices and standards in the advising field; stays current withrelevant research
- Stays abreast of changing institutional information includingnew programs, course changes, important dates, costs, and updatesin university-wide initiatives and policies
- Understands the institution’s interpretation of FERPA rules forthe release of student information to faculty, parents, students,etc.
- Available to meet with students in person or virtually via Zoomthroughout the year, through scheduled 1-on-1 appointments, groupadvising sessions, or drop-in advising
- Establishes and maintains ongoing contact with students througha variety of communication methods, including telephone, email,Zoom, and social media platforms
- Advise during new student registration programs
- Accurately document advisement and student meeting details
- Serve on campus committees, as needed
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of advising theory and best practices in academicadvisement
- Challenges of entering freshman and transfer students andeffective retention strategies
- Teaching techniques and strategies
- Effective advising techniques with special populations
- Ability to research and write reports
- Strong organizational skills (maintaining accurate files), and(verbal and written) communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with campus constituents
- Computer application skills
- Knowledge of Banner and DegreeWorks preferred
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Advising or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Two years postsecondary education advisement experience.
