An active participant in campus-wide advising and retention initiatives, the Academic Advisor utilizes in-depth institutional knowledge and appropriate student development theories to resolve complex situations, facilitate student learning, and ensure University policies and procedures are applied consistently. The Academic Advisor may serve as a team leader, mentor, trainer, and/or supervisor to other Academic Advisors in the absence or at the request of the direct supervisor, but primarily focuses on direct student advising.

Responsibilities
Academic Advising (80%)
  • Provide personalized academic advising to students, assisting with course selection, degree requirements, academic planning, registration, and schedule adjustments.
  • Offer guidance on academic policies, procedures, and resources to support student success, and interpret University policies and curriculum to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Coach students on academic challenges in individual and group formats, providing strategies for improvement and success and making appropriate referrals to support services when necessary.
  • Monitor and track student academic progress, offering proactive support and interventions as needed, especially for at‑risk students.
  • Advise students on major selection, career goals, and co‑curricular activities to enhance their educational experience.
  • Develop and provide academic resources and materials to students, including a term-by-term academic schedule, study guides, planning tools, and informational brochures.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and workshops related to academic advising, study skills, and career planning.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency and inclusivity in all interactions with students, colleagues, and stakeholders, engaging in self‑reflection and training to challenge personal biases and promote belonging.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of advising policies, procedures, and best practices, developing goals and objectives for improvement of the advising unit in conjunction with the direct supervisor.
  • Utilize advising technologies and tools effectively to support student advising and academic planning, and teach students how to use advising‑related software and tools.
  • Solicit and incorporate feedback from students, colleagues, and supervisors to continuously improve advising practices and services.
  • Represent the academic unit or advising department through participation on University committees, caucus leadership, and/or teaching courses.
  • Provide mentorship and training to new advising staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.

  • Review academic records, placement tests, and other standardized test results with students to ensure placement in appropriate courses, and administer overrides when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date student records in accordance with State/Federal law and University regulations, and ensure data security.
  • Participate in orientation programs, advising events, and recruitment activities to support incoming and prospective students.
  • Establish effective communication channels with students, faculty, and staff to facilitate information sharing and support, ensuring students receive timely information on educational options and University policies.
  • Collaborate with academic departments, career services, counseling centers, and other campus partners to provide comprehensive support to students and develop contacts with departments and faculty.
  • Stay informed about trends, best practices, and developments in academic advising and higher education, and participate in professional development opportunities, training sessions, and conferences.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments and/or colleges and the Director of Central Advising to ensure a coordinated approach to advising and retention.
