Job summary

UMBC is seeking an Assistant Director for the George & Betsy Sherman Center in Baltimore to lead budgeting, staffing, and program-wide operations. The role reports to the Executive Director and engages with UMBC units, scholars, alumni, and external partners.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree and 3+ years' experience in operations, budgeting, and policy interpretation, with strong organizational and communication skills. A focus on PreK-12 and higher education success is valued.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Public Policy, Economics or related field.
  • 3 years of operations experience including budgeting, payroll, and personnel management.
  • Ability to interpret University policies and procedures in finance, HR, payroll, purchasing, and sponsored programs.
  • Strong organizational, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee departmental budget ($3.25 million) in collaboration with the Executive Director of the George and Betsy Sherman Center. Oversee financial processes, reconciliation, and document retention requirements via the appropriate technology-based platforms and systems as necessary related to a diversity of funding sources.
  • Serve as a member of Sherman Center Leadership, providing strategic vision to new programs and current center infrastructure.
  • Guide departmental PIs in developing timelines and budgets for proposals, manage submission of all proposals through Kuali, serve as main point of contact for Central Departments.
  • Supervise business specialist and graduate assistants.

The George & Betsy Sherman Center is committed to excellence in urban schools. Established by a visionary gift to UMBC from George and Betsy Sherman, the Center supports transformational education in four connected areas: Outstanding teaching, School Community Partnerships, Early Childhood Learning, and research. Encompassing programs include the Sherman Scholars Program, the Reach Together Tutoring Program, HIPPY, MECLP and other Sherman Center initiatives.

Position Overview

The Assistant Director serves as part of the Center’s strategic leadership team and advises in maximizing Center resource, budget construction, and project management for center wide initiatives. This position will oversee the Center’s support structures including 2-3 Graduate Assistants and a Specialist. Serving as the expert on UMBC Policies and procedures, this position will ensure organizational harmony and compliance across all Sherman Center programs. This dynamic position engages a wide cross section of UMBC units, Sherman constituent groups (i.e. scholars, alumni, and UMBC students), and external partners (i.e. school systems and school staff).

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business, Public Policy, Economics or related field.
  • 3 years of experience in operations including budgeting, payroll, personnel management.
  • Ability to understand and interpret University policies and procedures in areas of finance, human resources, payroll, purchasing, and sponsored programs.
  • Strong organizational, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion, tact, and confidentiality.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Word, and the Google Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2+ years of university administration experience.
  • Knowledge of UMBC processes around tuition and academic programing, grant administration, gift processing, procurement, and recruitment.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and deadlines with limited supervision or guidance.
  • Experience overseeing teams.
  • Ability to produce a variety of reports, ranging from highly detailed to succinct executive summaries.
  • Ability to solve problems in a supportive and thoughtful manner, taking into consideration the various personalities and perspectives of customers.

Salary

Salary: $74,000 - $84,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
