Our client, one of the fastest-growing and active real estate private equity firms in Nashville, is seeking an Assistant Controller to help lead financial operations for their expanding portfolio. They were founded by investors with decades of experience, having directly purchased, owned and operated over $3B of properties for some of the most respected family offices, entrepreneurs and foundations in the world. This hire can be based in Birmingham and work remotely with occasional travel to Nashville.

What You'll Do:

  • Accounting & Reporting: Help lead a quarterly close, build robust reporting packages, ensure GAAP compliance in relevant accounting software (e.g., Yardi Investor Management Portal), and establish consistent practices for journal entries and reconciliations. You'll also help develop processes for tracking capital accounts and distributions.
  • Process Documentation: Formalize and document accounting policies and procedures, creating clear step-by-step guides adaptable for future growth.
  • System Integration & Automation: Support system implementation efforts, eliminate manual spreadsheet dependencies, and identify tools to streamline treasury, reporting, and finance processes.
  • Treasury & AP Oversight: Monitor cash flows, oversee accounts payable, and coordinate intercompany transfers with a focus on internal controls.
  • Tax Coordination: Collaborate with the Head of Finance and external preparers on entity-level reporting and build a scalable book-to-tax reconciliation process.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • 5–8 years of experience in real estate, fund accounting, or public accounting.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and partnership accounting.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple entities and books of record.
  • High proficiency in Excel (reconciliations, pivot tables, formulas).

Bonus Points:

  • CPA (current or inactive).
  • Experience with real estate accounting software (e.g., Yardi).
  • Experience with complex entity structuring (TICs, 1031s, JVs).
  • Experience documenting or improving accounting processes.
  • Fund waterfall/promote tracking knowledge.
