Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Civil Engineer in Wallingford, CT to support design teams on critical electrical infrastructure projects in the Northeast. You will assist with civil design from concept through construction, adapting plans for budget and client needs.

You will perform site grading, hydrologic calculations, SWPPP, utility connections, and CAD updates under supervision, contributing to bid packages and field verifications.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited program (ABET preferred).
• Internship or related consulting experience is a plus.
• Basic civil engineering techniques and procedures knowledge.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office; CAD and civil software skills listed in tools section.

Responsibilities

• Assist in civil design from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assist in site access design, grading, earthwork modeling, hydrologic and hydraulic calculations.
• Assist in soil erosion, sediment control, and stormwater management per guidelines.
• Prepare SWPPP and stormwater studies.
• Assist with utility connections to public mains.
• Prepare civil construction specs, quantity take-offs, and bidding support.
• Review contractor submittals, RFIs, and as-builts.
• Modify and review production drawings for electrical infrastructure projects.
• Assist with project manager requests for civil components and analyses.
• Apply fundamental civil engineering concepts and procedures.
• Research and compile project-related data and studies.
• Compile reports and studies.
• Update CAD drawings as needed.
• Assist with client presentations, shop drawings, and contract administration.
• Perform field inspections and measurements for public/private clients.
